Treetops – First Serviced Apartment in Singapore to Install Vertical Axis Wind Turbine for Sustainable Energy

Treetops Executive Residences, an environmentally friendly serviced apartment, is pleased to announce the official commissioning of their latest green retrofit, the Vertical Axis Wind Turbine, which is part of the Tri-Generation green retrofit system.  This is a remarkable addition to the green apartment hotel’s list of green initiatives implemented to reduce environmental impact and at the same time, provide an enhanced living environment for total well-being of guests staying at Treetops.

Treetops’ energy efficient tri-generation system operates by capturing waste heat to run the absorption chiller for the air-conditioning of the green building as well as to heat up a centralised hot water system for continuous hot water supply, which substituted 400 individual electric hot water heaters previously installed inside the serviced apartments, saving more energy.

As part of the tri-gen green retrofit system, an additional carbon fiber vertical wind turbine has been installed to harness energy from the discharged air of the exhaust to generate additional electricity for powering lightings within the basement car park of the green apartment hotel.

Well-known for its energy savings and reduction of greenhouse emissions functions, the tri-generation system though often used in manufacturing plants, is the first to be installed in a serviced apartment within the Singapore city. This energy efficient recovery system has allowed Treetops to further reduce their carbon footprint, drastically slashing its energy consumption by 50% as compared to the base year in 2007.

The installation of the tri-generation plant puts Treetops ahead of its competition at the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA) 2014, where Treetops was awarded the honourable Green Leadership Award 2014. Organised by Enterprise Asia, AREA honours companies that have demonstrated outstanding corporate social responsibility and contributed to sustainability.

In recognition of Treetops environmentally friendly building, Building & Construction Authority Singapore (BCA) presented Treetops with the BCA Green Mark Platinum Award. Treetops is the first few serviced apartments in Singapore to receive the BCA Green Mark Platinum, which is one of the highest ratings for green building certification locally.

Well-known as a green apartment hotel in Singapore, Treetops also clinched the first-runner-up position in the Green Building Awards (Large Building Category) at the distinguished ASEAN Energy Awards 2014, where Treetops was shortlisted by BCA to compete at. The organiser, ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) is an intergovernmental organisation established by Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

Adding to Treetops’ green accolades is the Best Eco-Living Serviced Apartment Brand, Singapore, awarded by Global Brands Magazine for Treetops’ exceptional commitment to innovation, service and the environment.

At Treetops, going green has always been a priority. Treetops recognises that the commitment involves much more than what has already been done. Hence, Treetops will continue to explore more green features that will not only enhance their guests’ living environment, but also benefit the environment as a whole.
