New Partnership with The Ministry of Defence to Deliver Defence and Security Education

The new contract will provide agile and innovative teaching to military officers, public servants, and security professionals from the UK and the UK’s international partners.

The Command and Staff Academic Provision (CSAP) contract award were reaffirmed on Tuesday (18 January 2022) at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in Shrivenham, by Major General Andrew Roe, Chief Executive and Commandant of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, and Professor Shitij Kapur, President & Principal of King’s College London, in the presence of Lieutenant-General Sir George Norton KCVO CBE, Commandant of the Royal College of Defence Studies.

King’s College London has been awarded a new Ministry of Defence (MoD) contract to continue delivering defence and security education at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom.

Announced on Tuesday 18 January, the contract will establish a new academic and research partnership aimed at enhancing educational provision for UK service personnel, civil servants, and international allies.

The King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies (KIASS), in the School of Security Studies, will deliver defence and security education at the Joint Services Command and Staff College (JSCSC) and Army Division based at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham, and the Royal College for Defence Studies (RCDS) in London, with RAND Europe and Cranfield University collaborating with King’s to support academic provision.

Building on a 25-year partnership between King’s and the UK Defence Academy, the new Command and Staff Academic Provision Project (CSAP) will be implemented from September 2022 for up to seven years.

Announcing the contract award, Major General Andrew Roe, the Chief Executive and Commandant of the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, said: “This exciting new partnership will deliver our continued goal of ever-evolving educational relevance to meet the needs of Defence. Geopolitics, technology and the character of warfare, and instructional methods will continue to change, and our Professional Defence and Security Education must keep pace and reside at the cutting-edge.”

KIASS and the School of Security Studies sit within the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy at King’s College London.

This new direct contract between King’s and the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom will deliver academic support to command and staff provision at the Defence Academy and the Royal College of Defence Studies from September 2022.
