Access Bank Mozambique Embraces Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives

Access Bank Mozambique

Since it began operating in Mozambique, Access Bank Mozambique has been committed to environmental sustainability, promoting, and implementing guidelines and initiatives in this area that meet increasingly urgent climate concerns.

Over the last few years, it has supported and carried out various actions throughout the country with the aim of helping and raising awareness among communities for a cleaner and more sustainable future.

The Bank promoted the planting of cashew trees in Gaza province, involving its own employees in the initiative.

The support consisted of financing the transportation of cashew seedlings to the planting site and advice and mentoring for the sustainability and consistency of the trees. The aim of the project was to contribute to environmental improvement by rejuvenating the cashew park and to the self-sufficiency of the community’s population.

Mindful of the natural disasters to which the country is vulnerable, the Bank supported the victims of the floods that hit Mozambique at the beginning of 2023, mostly in the south of the country. This event was characterized by heavy rains, flooding in large areas of housing and cultivation, the cutting of communication routes and the destruction of economic and social infrastructure.

To help, the Bank donated food and other necessities to the affected populations. Employees joined in this initiative, offering clothing, footwear, blankets, and food.

Also in the environmental field, Access Bank supported the refurbishment and painting of the ‘Biodiversity Wall’ in Maputo. This initiative was part of the ‘Preservation of Our Fauna’ project, which brought together various institutions, companies, and organizations with the aim of raising awareness of the importance of preserving nature, particularly by protecting some wild species at risk of extinction.

As an environmentally responsible institution, it has promoted several beach clean-up initiatives, an initiative that is already a Bank trademark. On World Cleanup Day (September 17), it carried out an initiative to collect recyclable and common waste at Macaneta beach in Maputo.

The purpose of this activity is to join forces to keep public and private spaces free of waste. At the same time, they want to make people aware of the importance of protecting the environment.

Faced with the urgency of a problem that belongs to everyone, the Bank has also implemented measures internally to get its employees to adopt environmentally friendly behaviors.

It was recently awarded the ‘Best CSR Bank- Mozambique, 2023’ prize by Global Brands Magazine. This award recognizes the bank’s ongoing commitment to social responsibility initiatives and the implementation of policies that defend sustainable practices.
