Discover the Latest Trends!

Black Friday has traditionally been associated with massive retail sales. However, in recent years, the travel industry has cleverly capitalised on this consumer frenzy, making Travel Tuesday a golden chance for bargain-hunting travellers. As the travel industry evolves, this trend is expected to expand, providing travellers with fantastic discounts on flights, hotels, and vacation packages.

Retailers have long understood how to boost end-of-year purchases on major sales days such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Tourism companies are now joining in, marketing Travel Tuesday bargains that are generating a lot of interest among customers. Travel Tuesday, during the week after Thanksgiving, acts as a promotional opportunity for airlines, cruise lines, hotels, resorts, and other vacation service providers, similar to how shops discount flat-screen TVs and appliances during Black Friday sales.

Although the notion dates back at least to 2018, a recent analysis by global consulting firm McKinsey shows that interest in Travel Tuesday has increased in the post-pandemic period. According to the company’s analysis, Google search data shows a whopping 500% spike in queries about Travel Tuesday between November 2021 and November 2023. In comparison, Cyber Monday searches have dropped by roughly 40% since 2020.

While overall searches for Cyber Monday continue to be much higher than those for Travel Tuesday, McKinsey claims that the latter’s increasing popularity implies that it has established a stable and expanding foothold among the calendar-linked marketing pushes surrounding Thanksgiving. This spike in search activity has been matched by a surge in bookings from travel-related firms offering considerable discounts. Last year, Travel Tuesday reservations on airlines and cruise lines increased by 60% and 55%, respectively, compared to the two weeks before and after the event. During the same four-week period, hotel bookings jumped by approximately 28 per cent, lagging only slightly below the 29 per cent spike witnessed on Cyber Monday.

The prices given on Travel Tuesday can be spectacular. For example, JetBlue advertised one-way rates starting at £39 to locations in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Caribbean, while Hawaiian Airlines offered tickets for around £78 each way between mainland and island towns. Furthermore, hotel giants such as Hilton offered discounts of up to 50% off room rates at select locations. AFAR, the trade newspaper aggregated these and other 2023 Travel Tuesday discounts.

Several reasons contribute to consumers’ increased interest in this promotional event. For starters, the pandemic-era desire to travel both domestically and internationally has persisted. This trend continues, with airlines and hotels seeing an increase in business. Furthermore, the previous two-year era of rising inflation has caused most consumers to seek the best value before making any purchase, including vacations.

Travel Tuesday’s timing is also clever, as it comes after many consumers have finalised arrangements for year-end trips or family visits. Shoppers are often eager to save money on travels scheduled for the coming months, making this a perfect time for warm-weather getaways during the colder winter months.

Travel companies can regard Travel Tuesday as an opportunity to increase revenue on a day when booking numbers are generally low. According to the McKinsey analysis, when the weather in their area becomes dismal, travellers are more likely to book trips to warm-weather destinations.

The concept of Travel Tuesday arose as a planned manoeuvre by travel businesses to leverage the post-Thanksgiving buying frenzy. They appeal to budget-conscious travellers looking for affordable vacations by offering exceptional prices and promotions on the Tuesday after Black Friday. This scheduling enables travellers to plan future travels while still experiencing the excitement of the holiday shopping season.

Strategic Travel Timing on Tuesday
